NBA legend LeBron James has once again sparked major speculation with a cryptic post on social media. The 40-year-old Los Angeles Lakers star announced that he will be making a major announcement on Tuesday, October 8, at 12 PM ET.
LeBron used the hashtag #TheSecondDecision, a playful nod to his famous 2010 televised special “The Decision,” when he revealed he was joining the Miami Heat. In the video teaser, LeBron is seen walking onto a quiet basketball court and sitting across from a man, resembling the setup from the original event hosted by Jim Gray.
Retirement or Something Else?
As LeBron enters his 23rd NBA season, fans and analysts alike are wondering if this announcement could signal his retirement. When asked about his future during Lakers media day, LeBron said:
"I’m excited about the opportunity to be able to play the game that I love for another season. However the journey lays out this year, I’m super-invested, because I don’t know when the end is. I know it’s a lot sooner than later."
Or Just Another Business Move?
It’s also very possible that this is part of a marketing campaign. LeBron is partnered with major brands like Nike, Pepsi, DraftKings, and Amazon. Notably, Amazon is launching another Prime Day event on Tuesday, the same day as LeBron’s announcement. He recently appeared in a commercial for Amazon earlier this year.
Still Dominating the Game
Despite his age, LeBron continues to perform at an elite level. Last season, he averaged 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds across 70 games. He remains the NBA’s all-time leading scorer with over 42,000 points and has repeatedly said he wants to keep competing for championships.
The Lakers, who added superstar Luka Dončić in a major trade last season, finished third in the Western Conference but were knocked out in the first round by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
So—will LeBron retire, or is this just another big-brand reveal? All eyes will be on Tuesday.
